The Humber and North Yorkshire Area Prescribing Committee was launched in November 2024. It has been formed by a merger of the Humber and North Yorkshire and York APCs and reviews and maintains the Formulary covering all Places within the Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership. It is an Integrated Care System-wide committee made up of Medically Qualified Clinicians (GPs, hospital Consultants, Specialists); Pharmacists (from all sectors) and Senior Nurses, from all Places within the Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership.
Strategic leadership of the Humber and North Yorkshire APC ensures that a collective, consistent and strategic approach to medicines management and prescribing; issuing clear guidance for medical professionals and Independent Non-medical Prescribers, improving competences and ensuring that NPSA and NICE guidelines are routinely available and always put into practice. This includes ensuring that all medicines with a relevant NICE Technical Appraisal (NICE TA) are available to the patients of our region, with a consistent approach to financial efficiency, utilising new and progressive services/treatments whist removing obsolete and unnecessary therapeutics, as well as monitoring resulting outcomes on the safe, effective and efficient management of medicines across organisational interfaces, taking into account the impact on the entire health community of the Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership.
As part of the governance process for the Area Prescribing Committee, promoting clinical engagement ,the sub-committee issues draft suggested formulary positions for medicines and guidelines it considers, then opens a 4-week consultation to allow for feedback on those suggestions. Anyone may feedback on the draft formulary positions – either as an individual, as a department or team, as an organisation etc. All are encouraged to engage with the consultation process about formulary changes that may affect their prescribing or area of expertise.
Current consultations may be found here: APC consultations – Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership. We use the comments and feedback to reach a final decision about the formulary status of a medicine/therapeutic product. The summary of APC decisions is published each month Area Prescribing Committee (APC) minutes and decisions – Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership.
APC approved documents including Shared Care Protocols may be found here Area Prescribing Committee (APC) approved documents – Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership
There is also an HNY APC netFormulary site, organised into BNF chapters, which enables examination and searching of the Humber and North Yorkshire APC formulary. A logical and systematic structure has been adopted to ensure that the Formulary can be used as a quick, effective and informative reference for prescribers.
